Marital Musing

I do my grocery shopping once a month. I find it easier to have things in stock for a month than have my domestic tell me every few days what’s missing and what’s not. Saves me the trips to supermarkets after work and some insane traffic. Just as we moved into the new place, getting a routine set was not too difficult. But the grocery shopping was a nightmare. Everyday (almost) as my domestic trails me to the car in the mornings, he’d be rattling off things that we needed for day to day functioning. After a month, having figured out the quantities etc that we go through for the month, I put down a list with everything from rice to garbage bags! Now, happily on our 6th month, the grocery routine is fool proof. Moreover, it’s convenient when you come home after work to fix dinner and you know exactly what’s at home and what’s not. Menu planning becomes that much more easier. The perishables however, happen every 10 days or so. Walking to the top of the road, we have a vegetable stall that replenishes on a daily basis, so it’s like selecting produce right out of a garden. Meats and Fish we’ve got our own places that we stick to. Having 2 dogs at home means that they go through more rice, veges, meat and fish than we do! Luke (the Belgian x Dalamatian) growing up steadily, it was funny to note that rice consumption increased by a Kg every month. He’s gone from this wiry rascal looking mutt to a very handsome and staid big black velvet coated animal. Skippy, my rescue mission is every bit the street dog, but he’s cleaned up pretty well too.

I like shopping at supermarkets and have comfortably settled in at one place. I’ll probably not switch my monthly shopping routine to another location, regardless of how closer it is to home. Generally, I stop over on a weekday after work on my way home and the process takes me a good 2 hours to complete. I prefer to take my time browsing the aisles rather that power shopping with a list in hand. I kick off my heels in the car, slip into a pair of rubber slippers and walk around with the trolley. After 3 months of peering at my BB which has the list stashed, it’s now become an intuitive memorised sequence. I do fish the list out at the end of the round and do a once over though just in case. C joined me one day and it was like shopping with a kid! I’d send him off to look for something hoping to cut short the time spent instore and he’d come back with armfuls of munchies and junk food! That being said, it’s one of the chores that I actually enjoy doing and in fact, look forward to! How about you?

    • I guess it depends on personal preference. Generally, our weekends are packed with other stuff to do that grocery shopping becomes an annoying chore!

  3. Ah yes… the joys of monthly grocery shopping! I always found browsing along the aisles really relaxing, and sometimes after a really bad day at work, I’d go to Arpico or Keels at Hyde Park and just walk around. Was a routine pregnancy outing as well :)

Apart from the chill factor, I so get your point about knowing exactly what you have and have not got at home. Sending Darling doesn’t work, he buys all sorts of “stuff” and my bill doubles!

Every Tuesday I would stop at Keels/ Arpico whichever is less traffic on the road and do the weekly shopping. Vegetables at wellawatha market on a friday evening / saturday morning. The major rice, dhall and Indian stuff once a month at Saravanas Stores in Fort.
